Poetry contest celebrates Jawdat Haydar
A literary competition was held in Ali Bin Abi Taleb campus last Monday. The objective of the competition was to encourage students to read poems by some Lebanese poets. It was important to introduce the famous poet Jawdat Haydar to youth in order to promote the civic values the poet advocated.
The competition was between students from Ali Bin Abi Taleb College and Makassed School for Girls 10th & 11th graders. The winner from ABAT was Rana Mourad and from Makassed School for Girls was Hiba Naji

استكمالا لتنفيذ أنشطة الرسالة ،لقد نفذ تلاميذ الصف الثالث (أـ ب زيارة ميدانية الى مركز البريد الكائن في شارع محمد الحوت بحيث تعرفوا إلى رحلة الرسالة بعد كتابتها.

Good Eating Habits… Here We Come!

What should we eat? What does eating healthy mean? How many portions are we allowed of this kind of food or that one per day? Many questions arise, and our fourth and fifth graders have all the answers for you? How is that possible? Have they suddenly turned into "Food Experts"?
... Well, we have all the details for you, so please take some time to read along.
As part of its goal of educating learners globally, ABAT encouraged its elementary students to take part in the "Ajyal Salima - Healthy Generations" project that aims at enhancing our youngsters' eating habits, and that is in an attempt to fight the phenomenon of overweight, which is fast-spreading among children worldwide.
This nutrition project is carried out by the Nutrition Department at the Faculty of Agriculture and Foods Sciences at AUB and sponsored by Nestle Middle East. It is targeting our fourth and fifth graders. Every Monday, and for 13 consecutive ones, experts in the nutrition field, under the supervision of the specialist in nutrition Mrs. Carla Habeeb Mrad, are visiting our students to raise their awareness about how to eat healthily and make a positive and sustainable change in their daily eating habits and practices.
Our young ones are interactively participating in nutrition games in class, learning helpful tips about their health, and acquiring new skills in how to prepare quick and healthy delicious meals at home on their own.
Being part of such a project makes it possible for our young learners to grow more healthily both physically and intellectually.
So please drop by, and feel at ease to ask our little food experts about the dos and don'ts of eating. Don't you worry about the charges, you'll get a free consultation!

للّعب أهميّة كبرى في مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة ، اذ أن الأطفال يتعلمون بشكل أفضل في البيئات التي تسمح لهم بالاستطلاع و الاكتشاف و اللعب 

ويشكّل اللعب جزء مهما"في برنامج رعاية الطفل ونموه، كما أنه مرتبطٌ بشكلٍ وثيقٍ بتطويرسلوكه النفسي والعاطفي والاجتماعي والمعرفي.

انطلاقا" مما سبق ذكره ، أقام قسم الروضة في كليّة علي بن أبي طالب مهرجان " مرح الألوان"، شارك فيه أطفال قسم الروضة

و صفّ الأول أساسي، وذلك بحضور ذويهم حيث شاركوهم النشاطات المتنوعة و المسلية الخاصة بالألوان و مزجها.

نتمنى أن تستمتعوا بما ستشاهدونه كما استمتع أطفالنا في هذا اليوم المليء بمرح الألوان.

5	50 د.	ان يتعرف المشاركون على ما يجب أن يقوم به الطفل للعمل	- عصف ذهني- لعب ادوار - ورق- اقلام	- بعض المهام معقدة ويمكن أن يستفيد الطفل  من التعلم من خلال أدوار واضحة ومسؤوليات مسندة إليه داخل المجموعة. يطلب الميسر من المشاركين كمجموعات تطبيق كيف يمكن إنشاء أدوار بسيطة وواضحة، ومهمة للطفل. تعرض كل مجموعة هذه الأدوار - هناك بعض القوانين التي تحكم عملية التعلم ، كما أنها تدعم ما نعرفه عن نمو الدماغ ونمائه ، وسوف نلاحظ أنها تنطبق أيضا على الأطفال الذين يريدون التعلم. سيقوم الميسر بعرض قوانين التعلم ومن ثم يطلب من كل مجموعة من المشاركين أخذ احد القوانين تحديد كيفية التعامل معها بطريقة ابداعية. - عرض مشكلات  تواجه المشاركين في طبيعة الأطفال أثناء العمل مع المجموعات ثم تأخذ كل مجموعة من المشاركين احدى المشكلات تحدد اسبابها وكيفية التعامل معها. تكتب الملخصات على اللوح القلاب
6	50 د.	- ان يتعرف المشاركون على الطرائق في كيفية تطبيق التعلم التعاوني	اوراق، اقلام ملونة، كرتون	- كيف يمكن أن أفعل ذلك؟ كيف يمكن التكيف مع ذلك؟  الحل عبر  الأبعاد الخمسة الأساسية. يقوم المشاركون بتنظيم التعلم من خلال تطبيق هذه الأبعاد. - ما هي النشاطات الصفية التي  تستخدم التعلم التعاوني؟ يعرض الميسر العناوين ويطلب من المشاركين تطبيقها عمليا (بانوراما، دائرة الحكيم، الشركاء، ثلاث دقائق استعراض.....)
7.		أن يعد المشاركون وحدة تعليمية يطبق فيها التعلم التعاوني	اوراق، اقلام ملونة، كرتون	عمل مجموعات: تختار كل مجموعة احدى الآليات وتقوم بتطبيقها للمساعدة في تطبيق التعلم التعاوني.
8.	15د.	تقييم الدورة		العودة إلى الشجرة التي تم صنعها في بداية الدورة ومقارنة ما تم القيام به وبتطابقه مع التوقعات

Our ABAT Storytellers Sailing on the British Council "KIDS READ" Ship!

Our young primary students at ABAT are participating in the "Kids Read"! What is it about? READ along to find out!

"Kids Read" is a reading program, sponsored exclusively by HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd & Affiliates and addresses school primary students, encouraging them to read for pleasure, inside and outside the classroom.

Kids Read will run initially for one academic year in 13 countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Qatar and United Arab Emirates, and it will include reading, teacher training, competitions, community events and much much more. Around 25.000 students are involved in this event... quite a huge number!

Our students from grades 1 to 6 told their favorite stories using different storytelling techniques. With the assistance of our outstanding creative English teachers, our children performed beautifully and were videotaped for the sake of the competition. Our videos were uploaded and waiting to be evaluated! So pray for us, everyone!

What Can WE Learn from Our Kids?

The ECE advocacy campaign at Makassed aims at:


• Training the educators and parents in a way that supports the development of early childhood through a series of periodic meetings that will be attended by specialists in early childhood.
• Implementing a series of activities that aim at developing both the skills and knowledge of children in preschool and Cycle I.
• Planning and participating in conferences and festivals which aim at raising the awareness on the importance of early childhood.
• Preparing an annual calendar that would promote our orientations regarding early childhood.
• Engaging both the media and the decision-makers in the field of early childhood in supporting the awareness campaign we are launching.


The campaign was officially launched today in the directorate of educational affairs and includes a year and a half program.

The Launching Of ECE

Tomorrow will witness the launching of the Early Childhood Education  (ECE) project at Makassed Philanthropic Islamic Association in Beirut, in collaboration with World Forum Foundation.

 550 students, in addition to 30 teachers and 100 parents from three Makassed schools, will benefit from phase 1 of this project; with the hope that, during phase 2, this project spreads to all Makassed schools both in urban and suburban areas, and then to other Lebanese schools.

This project aims at raising the awareness on the importance of the early childhood phase due to the significance of this age group in education and in both human and economic development. ECE is a phase of high importance, never the less, it is underestimated by many worldwide.The latest researches and reports issued by international and local institutions stressed on the importance of early childhood phase and the utmost need to circulate its significance. Likewise,  statistics showed that the Arab region fell way behind in spreading the awareness on this prominent phase. This reality had been emphasized during the meetings that took place on the margins of the conference on Global Leaders for Early Childhood, held in Hawaii in May 2011 and attended by representatives of Makassed and of the Arab countries. So we found it a must to encourage decision-makers to allocate further attention to this age group.

The Expected Outcomes of our project:

a.     On the short term:

·        Raising the level of awareness on the importance of this age group in building the child’s personality

·        Enhancing the skills, abilities, techniques, and knowledge of the parents and teachers directly dealing with learners of early childhood

·        Adjusting the parents’ behavior and all those who directly deals with children and introducing them to activities that satisfy the needs of this age group

·        Ensuring the efficient participation of children and providing them with the necessary skills that would enable them to convey the knowledge to other children as well as to adults

b.     On the long term:

·         Ensuring  quality teaching to young learners

·        Raising awareness on the development of early childhood

·        Supplying the caregivers and especially teachers and parents with a number of techniques and strategies that would enhance the quality of care they are offering, in a way that strengthens the level of positive interaction with the youngsters and enriches the direct environment in which they are growing.

·        Providing children with chances of succeeding in their learning and achievement which would reduce the percentage of failure and dropouts in later phases, as confirmed by the latest researches and studies.


The project includes: awareness campaign, ECE calendar, training of teachers, meeting with parents, ECE Day, joint work with Unesco, and a conference.


It is important to note that AlMakassed has always been a pioneer in providing care for ECE, for instance the Child to Child program at Khadija Al Kobra, the Conflict Resolution progarm at Khalil Shehab, and the production of the learning series Toufoulati Kanzi, which was awarded last year.


We will be posting more news about this project, so the best is yet to come!

ضمن مشروع تطوير العادات الغذائية الصحية حضر أهالي تلامذة الصف الرابع والخامس أساسي للتعرف على تفاصيل المشروع بهدف التعاون سوياً لصحة أفضل لأولادهم وتضمن الاجتماع ترويقة صحية. قام التلامذة بتعبئة استمارة تتضمن اسئلة عن العادات الغذائية اليومية واخذ لهم الوزن والطول والخصر.

يوم الخميس بتاريخ 3 شباط 2012 اقامت المرحلتان المتوسطة والثانوية في كلية علي بن أبي طالب إحتفالاً بمناسبة ذكرى المولد النبوي الشريف فبعد تلاوة عطرة من القرآن الكريم قدمت التلميذة نيفين خالد قصيدة بمدح الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وبعدها قامت فرقة المدائح في الكلية بتقديم مجموعة من الأناشيد الدينية الخاصة بهذه المناسبة. وانني  انتهزها فرصة لأتقدم من تلامذتنا في الكلية بأحر التهاني بمولد الرسول الكريم اعاد الله هذه المناسبة على الجميع بالخير واليمن والبركة وكل عام والمقاصد بألف خير

BBC Practice News Day

Grade 10 students at Makassed Ali Ben Abi Taleb College were given the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience on 28 January 2012 by deciding it a Practice News Day. This day is one of the sessions that students were committed to do before arriving to the BBC News Day. Prior to that, using online lesson plans and materials, and with support from BBC staff and partners, the project coordinator, Miss Dounia Badereddine, helped students develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters on that day.

In March, the school will take part in an annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC aims to link.

The News Day on 15 March 2012 is a chance for all School Reporters to produce the news on the same day- coming together with the BBC to form a single reporting team working to a single deadline. This day will see students reporting the news for real with an authentic audience, created by the BBC linking to the schools' websites where students' reports will be published. Coverage of the day will also appear on BBC programmes and services.

The British Council and BBC News School Report and schools around the world, such as Makassed ABAT, are working together an exciting opportunity for students to make and broadcast their own news stories with their Connecting Classrooms partners.
